The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage began collecting information on cultural properties located in North Korea in 1984, in collaboration with related institutions and researchers from in and outside South Korea. In 1985, the information gathered was published into a book titled Cultural Heritage of North Korea: Overview and Current Status (Bukhan Munhwajae Siltae-wa Hyeonhwang). In 1992, the institute hosted an exhibition of photographs of cultural heritage in North Korea and published the accompanying catalogue Cultural Heritage of North Korea (Bukhan Munhawjae Dorok). Starting from 1997, the institute annually published one installment of the series Cultural Heritage of North Korea with Annotations (Bukhan Munhawjae Haeseoljip), each edition devoted to one category. Twelve volumes had been published by 2007.
