Charting a New Horizon for ASEAN-ROK Cultural Heritage Cooperation
The 5th operational meeting of the ASEAN-ROK Cultural Heritage Working Committee, spearheaded by the Korea Heritage Service (Administrator Choi Eung-chon, KHS), is set to take place on December 17-18 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Organized in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat, the meeting also draws support from the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspice of UNESCO (Director-General Ji-sung Kim, ICHCAP). This meeting has been convened as a result of the 25th ASEAN-ROK Summit held in October in Vientiane, Laos. It aims to foster discussions on enhancing cooperation in the field of cultural heritage, following the elevation of ASEAN-ROK relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). * The CSP, formalized during the 25th ASEAN-ROK Summit, marks the highest level of international partnership building upon the Strategic Partnership established at the 17th ASEAN-ROK Summit in 2010. Through this meeting, KHS will share progress with the 10 ASEAN member states and seek their input regarding the ASEAN-ROK Shared Cultural Heritage Cooperation Project which has been under preparation since last year. Additionally, KHS plans to share the results of a preliminary survey on the operation of the 1st term of the ASEAN-ROK Cultural Heritage Working Committee (2022-2024) with member states, incorporating their evaluations and suggestions for improvement into the development of strategies for the 2nd and 3rd terms. Furthermore, KHS will share the outcomes of various domestic cooperation projects, including the ASEAN Committee in Seoul (ACS) policy dialogue, information-sharing sessions with domestic organizations related to ASEAN cultural heritage, and research investigations on shared heritage between ASEAN and Korea.
