『한국 괘불의 미』 영문판(제 1편, 경상지역)과 국문판(제 2편, 전라지역) 발간 및 국내·외 배포
문화재청 국립문화재연구원(원장 김연수)은 국보·보물로 지정된 괘불의 특징을 지역별로 고찰한 학술총서 『한국 괘불의 미』의 영문판(제 1편, 경상지역)과 국문판(제 2편, 전라지역)을 발간하였다.
괘불은 사찰에서 야외 의식을 행할 때 사용하기 위해서 만든 대형 불화이다. 부처님이 설법하는 장면을 거대한 화폭에 정교하게 그린 괘불은 중국과 일본에서는 찾아보기 어려운 형식의 불화로, 우리나라의 독창성과 예술성을 대표하는 문화유산이다.
국립문화재연구원은 1970년대 중반부터 불교 회화 조사사업을 시작하였으며, 1985년부터 2001년까지 전국 사찰에 소장된 괘불에 대한 종합적인 조사를 수행했다. 2015년부터는 성보문화재연구원과 함께 대형불화 정밀조사를 진행하고 있다.
이번에는 그간의 조사 결과에 미술사 분석을 더하여 우리나라 괘불의 조형적 특징을 지역별로 살펴보기 위해 2022년부터 진행 중인 심화 연구 결과를 담았으며, 『한국 괘불의 미1: 경상지역』(2022)의 영문판인 『The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul 1 Gyeongsang Province』와 『한국 괘불의 미2: 전라지역』을 발간, 배포한다.
영문판(제 1편)에는 경상지역 사찰 24곳이 소장한 국가지정 괘불 26점에 대한 조사 결과를 수록했다. 괘불이 생소한 해외 독자와 연구자의 눈높이에 맞게 원고를 보완하고 화기(畵記)와 문양에 대한 내용을 추가하였다. 이 책자는 영어권 인문학 학술서와 논문에서 광범위하게 사용되는 표기 기준에 따라 작성되었고, 괘불을 단일 주제로 한 첫 영문 연구서라는 점에서 의미가 크다.
* 화기(畵記) : 불화의 제작 시기와 장소, 조성에 참여하거나 기여한 사람들의 이름 등을 기록한 것으로, 주로 그림 하단에 적혀있다.
국문판(제 2편)에는 전라지역 사찰 15곳에 있는 괘불 15점과 초본 1점에 대한 조사 결과가 담겼다. 전라지역의 화승(畵僧)과 도상 분석, 불교의식집에 대한 조사를 중심으로 조선 후기 전라지역 괘불의 역사성과 조형적 특징에 대한 연구결과를 수록했다. 또한, 괘불의 형성 과정을 이해하는 데 중요한 초창기 괘불과 전라지역에서 활발하게 활동한 의겸(義謙), 비현(丕賢)과 같은 여러 화승이 제작한 괘불의 세부 모습을 정교하게 감상할 수 있도록 고해상도의 사진으로 수록하였다.

* 의겸(義謙): 18세기 전반 전라지역과 경남지역에서 폭넓게 활동한 화승
* 비현(丕賢): 18세기 후반 전라지역에서 활발하게 활동한 화승
보고서는 국내·외 주요 도서관과 박물관, 문화유산 연구기관 등에 배포될 예정이다. 또한 현재 국립문화재연구원 국가유산 지식이음 누리집에서 전자책으로 누구나 쉽게 열람할 수 있으며, 누리집 내 ‘괘불 갤러리’에서 주요 괘불의 고화질 사진과 관련 정보도 확인할 수 있다.

문화재청 국립문화재연구원은 앞으로도 괘불의 가치를 국제적으로 확산하고 연구기반을 조성하기 위해 심화연구를 지속적으로 진행하고, 그 결과를 담은 총서를 적극적으로 발간해 나갈 예정이다.
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (Director-General: Kim Yeonsoo; hereafter, NRICH), an affiliate of the Cultural Heritage Administration of South Korea, has published the English version on gwaebul in Gyeongsang Province and the Korean version on gwaebul in Jeolla Province. These publications are part of the academic series The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul exploring the regional characteristics of gwaebul paintings designated as treasures and national treasures.
A gwaebul is a large-scale Buddhist hanging scroll hung outside of temple halls during outdoor Buddhist rituals. Gwaebul paintings elaborately depicting a scene of the Buddha preaching across a massive picture plane are a type of Buddhist painting rarely found in China or Japan. They are considered a form of cultural heritage that reflects the distinctiveness and artistry of Korean traditions.
The NRICH began its survey of Buddhist paintings in the mid-1970s. It conducted a comprehensive investigation of gwaebul paintings held at temples across the country from 1985 through 2001. It has been performing a detailed survey on large-scale Buddhist paintings since 2015 together with the Cultural Heritage Administration and Research Institute of Sungbo Cultural Heritage.
Since 2022, the NRICH has been conducting in-depth research on the visual features of Korean gwaebul paintings by region by applying art historical analysis to data accumulated by previous investigations. The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul 1: Gyeongsang Province (2022) in Korean was the first published result from this detailed research. The NRICH has also recently released an English edition of it and The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul 2: Jeolla Province in Korean.
The English version of The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul 1: Gyeongsang Province contains the findings from the investigations of twenty-six gwaebul paintings housed at twenty-four temples in the Gyeongsang region. The manuscript has been supplemented to make it more accessible to overseas readers or researchers who might be unfamiliar with gwaebul. Information about inscriptions, designs, and patterns was also added. This report was prepared according to a standard writing style widely used in English-speaking humanities scholarship. It is particularly significant as the first English-language research report on the subject of gwaebul.
The Korean version of The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul 2: Jeolla Province includes the results of a survey of fifteen gwaebul paintings and one preparatory drawing for a gwaebul held at fifteen temples across the Jeolla region. It examines the historic nature and visual features of gwaebul paintings produced in the region during the late Joseon period by analyzing the related monk-painters, iconography, and Buddhist ritual manuals in the area. High-resolution illustrations enable readers to appreciate the exquisite brushwork applied by skillful monk-painters such as Uigyeom and Bihyeon, actively practiced their art in Jeolla region, and the detailed images of early gwaebul paintings crucial to understanding the development of gwaebul.
These books will be distributed to major libraries, museums, and Korean cultural heritage research institutions in South Korea and overseas. They are also available in an e-book version the website of the NRICH’s National Heritage Knowledge Connection (https://portal.nrich.go.kr/). Moreover, the NRICH is providing high-resolution images of gwaebul through its Gwaebul Gallery (https://portal.nrich.go.kr:2024/kor/buddhaNdGallery.do) to allow closer viewing and promote a deeper understanding.
The NRICH is planning to continue its in-depth research and serial publications on gwaebul in an effort to support the international recognition of their value and expand the foundation for related research.
