Purpose of Establishment
“The Naju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage was established on October 18, 2005 for the systematic academic investigation and research of cultural heritage properties in the Honam area.”
Naju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage conducts academic surveys and emergency archeological excavations of cultural heritages in the Honam area to ascertain their value and to provide the results as basic data for historical education and cultural tourism resources.
Notably, we conduct surveys and research on large jar-coffin tombs, tombs whose front and rear sides resemble a square and circle respectively, and large dolmens in order to define the region's ancient cultures.
We also survey and research the region's cultural heritages by category and period to put together research findings and provide them to academia and the general public.

The Honam region has remains that will be important in establishing the nature of its ancient cultures, but due to various development projects, they are either being damaged or lost.
Restoration of Jar Coffins
This project aims to restore the ancient technology for and culture of producing large jar coffins, and to secure the basic materials required for defining the ancient culture of the Yeongsangang River area, which is thought to have based its funereal culture around the practice of jar coffin tomb customs.
