Academic Survey of Joseon Royal Tombs
Intensive academic investigations are under way on 44 royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) in the Seoul and Gaeseong areas. Results of the investigations will be used as basic information for academic research and restoration of the tombs, as well as their listing as UNESCO World Heritage sites and implementation of related policies. The research results will also be used to promote public understanding of the royal culture of the Joseon Dynasty.
Survey of Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty
Geonwolleung, tomb of King Taejo
The royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty are comprehensive cultural assets through which it is possible to observe and understand many aspects of royal life and culture; the sites, stone and wooden works: methods of tomb construction; and funeral procedures, all of which were recorded in writing. This survey was carried out by interdisciplinary cooperation involving Korean and foreign experts in ancient records, architecture, art history, landscaping, and such like.
